What is fat grafting?
Fat grafting is a procedure where we harvest the patient’s own fat, process it on the spot and reinject it in different areas of the face as a live graft.
What is it used for?
We use fat grafting for many different purposes. It is often used as a tissue filler to disguise and improve deep wrinkles and grooves on the face. We can augment lips giving them a natural feel and look. It is used as an adjunctive procedure in facial rejuvenation surgeries to replenish areas of the face where the natural fat of youth has disappeared.
How is this procedure performed?
It is normally performed under local anaesthesia in our minor surgery room. The donor area (abdomen, thighs, buttocks) is frozen and the fat is harvested with a thin suction cannula. The fat is then “washed” through” a special process and reinjected in the desired areas.
What is the recovery like?
There will be mild amounts of bruising and swelling in the operated areas that should disappear within days. A small amount of discomfort can be experienced, but this is easily controlled with the analgesics prescribed by Dr. Gantous.
How long does it last?
Not all the fat that is injected survive long term. Studies suggest that 30 to 70% of the fat graft will survive and give us a long lasting improvement that is totally natural.
