Dermal Filler Injections: Preparation and Post-Treatment Recovery Tips

Dermal Fillers

The thought of undergoing any type of cosmetic facial treatment can be a little intimidating for some people—especially if it’s your first time. But if you’re one of the thousands of Canadians who are dissatisfied with their appearances and the effects of aging, then you’re most likely already considering a few different cosmetic procedure options. Dermal filler injections are a convenient, and minimally invasive cosmetic procedure option that can get you on the fast track to looking and feeling your absolute best.

Compared to other types of facial cosmetic procedures like facelifts that require surgery, the results are fairly similar but the preparation and post-treatment aftercare are a lot easier.

What Are Dermal Filler Injections?

Dermal filler injections, also known as facial fillers, are liquid serums that come in a range of dosages depending on the level of treatment each patient needs. These serums are loaded with naturally occurring collagen-stimulating substances like hyaluronic acid, which is known to increase the skin’s elasticity and in turn smooth out fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

Popular dermal filler brands include:

These dermal fillers can be injected into various parts of the face including the chin, cheeks, around the eyes, and lips to reduce the signs of aging and replenish lost volume in areas that need it most. As the aging process progresses, collagen production in the skin slows down and certain parts of the face may start to naturally lose volume over time. This process results in dark spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and depressions throughout the face which can all deplete your self-esteem and make you look much older than you actually are.

Dermal fillers are an affordable simple solution to correct these cosmetic issues and help restore your confidence.

Preparing for a Dermal Filler Injections

There are a few important steps you should take to prepare yourself prior to undergoing a dermal filler procedure. Even though the procedure itself is quite simple and typically takes no longer than 15 to 30 minutes, there’s still some prep work involved on your part. Here are a few things you should to make sure you’re fully prepared.

Do Your Homework

The first step to preparing for any type of surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedure is to guarantee that you fully understand the steps and potential risks involved. Consulting with a board-certified and experienced facial plastic surgeon is a great place to start. In fact, no credible cosmetic surgeon would ever perform even the simplest procedure without first scheduling an in-depth patient consultation. This gives you an opportunity to ask any pressing questions you may have about the procedure and get all of the information you need to decide whether or not you want to move forward.

Your facial plastic surgeon will also take the time to examine your face and skin and also address any specific concerns you may have while also making specific recommendations based on your individual needs. The more you understand the nature of the procedure and what to expect, the better prepared you’ll be, so be sure to do your own research prior to the consultation. Remember, you’re not obligated to go through with it if you choose not to.

Make Sure the Procedure Is a Good Fit for You

Before getting a dermal injection, it’s important that you’re completely comfortable with the procedure and that you’re a good candidate. Let your facial plastic surgeon know in advance if you have any allergies or family history of certain illnesses during the consultation.

Choose an Experienced Cosmetic Surgeon

It’s extremely important that you’re completely comfortable and have established a trusting relationship with your cosmetic surgeon. Take the time to consult with a few different cosmetic surgeons and look into their credentials to ensure that they’re qualified enough to perform the procedure to your liking. Remember, you’re not obligated to choose a certain cosmetic surgeon just because you met with them once.

Preparations Closer to the Treatment Date

One Week before the Treatment

At this time, you should avoid blood thinning medications and supplements including the following: Aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, Ibuprofen, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, ginseng, garlic, and St. John’s Wort. Ask your cosmetic surgeon for a more detailed list of medications to avoid. During this time, you should also limit or completely stop your alcohol consumption.

48 Hours before the Treatment

Taking arnica two days before treatment is recommended because it can help reduce bruising and redness. You should avoid certain topical products like Retinol, anti-aging creams and serums, Retinoids, Tretinoin, and Glycolic Acid.

24 Hours before the Treatment

Try to avoid excessive sun exposure as this can damage the skin and make sure to wear sunscreen or moisturizers with a minimum of SPF 30.

Post-Dermal Treatment Recovery Tips

During and after the treatment, your facial cosmetic surgeon will instruct you to apply ice packs to the treated areas. The cooling sensation will help reduce redness, swelling, and bruising on your face. Since dermal fillers are an outpatient procedure that can be performed at the cosmetic surgeon’s clinic, you may be asked to stay behind for an additional 10 to 15 minutes for observation.

Once you’re given the green light and there are no signs of an adverse or allergic reaction, you’ll be allowed to leave. Depending on the amount of topical anesthesia you were given, though, you may need to arrange for a ride home following the procedure. Otherwise, you should be able to return to your normal activities.

For the first week or two, you’ll most likely be advised to avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities such as high intensity workouts and heavy lifting. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your aftercare instructions with you in full detail following the procedure.
